A.O. Transitional Services in Springfield,
Missouri, provides residential living services
to young women ages 16-20. This is a comprehensive
program including residential, educational, vocational
and recreational services, building toward independence.
The success of this service builds on the interests
and abilities of each individual.
Candidates for A.O. Transitional Services are in
the custody of the Children's Division. They come
from a variety of settings and are often 'aging
out' of settings such as traditional residential
care, foster care, and career foster care. Some
need to complete high school or a GED, while others
are ready to move on to post secondary education
or employment. Most residents have had little exposure
to the world of work and A.O. Transitional Services
help them get started on a career path.
Challenges are common in the areas of Daily Living
Tasks, Housing and Community Resources, Money Management,
Self-Care, Social Development, and Work and Study
Habits. All are working on their unique transition
to Independent Living. In the words of one young
woman, she and the others are at A.O. Transitional
Services to "get a boost on getting out on
our own."
